MLC
The basic aims of the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), 2006 are:
- to ensure comprehensive worldwide protection of the rights of Seafarers (the Convention is sometimes called the Seafareres’ Bill of Rights); and
- to establish a level playing field for countries and shipowners committed to providing decent working and living conditions for Seafarers, protecting them from unfair competition on the part of substandard ships.
STCW
The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) ensures that all Seafarers worldwide have the same basic training, certification and watchkeeping requirements, establishing standards that are internationally recognized.
MARPOL
The aim of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) is to keep our oceans clean by stopping, or at least minimizing the pollution caused by accidents and routine operations on ships.
MARPOL Annex V
MARPOL Annex V focus on the prevention of pollution by garbage from ships by eliminating the discharge of garbage from ships into the ocean.
